How to care for your custom painted helmet

A custom paint job is made to be used: on track, in the paddock, on the podium. With the right care it stays beautiful for longer. What to do, and what to avoid.

How to care for your custom painted helmet

A custom helmet is not a showpiece that has to stay on a shelf. It is made to race. Small scratches and signs of use will appear over time, and that is normal. But how you clean, store and transport your helmet makes a real difference to how long the finish keeps its depth and shine.

The first days: let the finish cure

After painting and lacquering, the finish needs time to cure. Only start using the helmet once you have been told it is ready for normal use. Using, cleaning or packing it too early can leave marks in the clear coat.

Cleaning: soft and simple

  1. Remove dust and insects with a soft, damp microfibre cloth. Never rub dry dirt across the surface.
  2. Only use soft materials and products that are suitable for the finish. In doubt? Ask before you try something.
  3. Dry gently with a clean microfibre cloth.
  4. Clean the visor separately, following the manufacturer's instructions.
Never use: solvents, aggressive chemicals, abrasive cleaners, scouring pads or polishes you are not sure about. They can dull or damage the clear coat, and on a matte finish a polish can leave shiny patches.

Storage and transport

  • Keep the helmet in a soft helmet bag, away from sharp objects and tools.
  • Do not leave it for long periods in direct sunlight or in a hot car.
  • Put it somewhere it cannot roll or fall. One fall can do more damage than months of use.
  • Shipping it? Use sturdy packaging with plenty of protective material.

Damaged paintwork?

Paintwork can often be repaired. That is possible when FreVyDesigns painted the helmet, or when you can provide the RAL numbers of the colours on it. Send a few clear photos of the damage through the contact form for a first opinion.

Paint is not a safety repair

A custom paint job is cosmetic work. It does not inspect, certify or repair the helmet itself. After a crash or a hard impact, always follow the manufacturer's instructions and replace the helmet when they say so. If you have any doubt about the safety of your helmet, contact the manufacturer or a qualified expert.
